17 Miscellaneous WordPress Plug-ins for 2011

Time to revise those WordPress plug-ins. WordPress is still the most common used publishing system by experts an amateurs alike. Which means also the most targeted by hackers, spam, bots, etc. I compiled a list of new and older, still popular and useful plug-ins for you to try out.

Some plug-ings have been around since last year and this is the first time I come across them. Goes to show how much option there is for WordPress that one can still be surprised by what there is available plug-in wise.

7 Plug-ins to Customize WordPress Admin Bar

WordPress 3.1 now adds the familiar Admin Bar to your website/weblog. A feature made popular by Tumblr first. WordPress added the Admin Bar a while ago to their web based weblogs and now to self hosted weblogs.

While a handy feature, not everyone is crazy about it. Myself for one, sometimes I can get really irked by any kind of bars on a website. I want the option to hide it or remove it completely. Also, if you manage a WordPress install that has many users you might want to control which users get to see the admin bar or not.

You can disable the admin bar with WordPress native settings:

Even so there are 7 plug-ins available already to completely disable the admin bar, leaving users no option. There are also a couple of plug-ins to give you more control over the admin bar. I have no doubt, knowing the WordPress community, that the amount of plug-ins to modify the admin bar will grow fast. Meanwhile check out the seven plug-ins listed below.

MooTools Plug-ins for Javascript Die Hards

jQuery is so mainstream and popular that other Javascript frameworks are often forgotten. There is Prototype, dojo and more. In the early days of Javascript frameworks MooTools was front runner.

MooTools is a compact, modular, Object-Oriented JavaScript framework designed for the intermediate to advanced JavaScript developer. It allows you to write powerful, flexible, and cross-browser code with its elegant, well documented, and coherent API.

As you can read from their site, MooTools is more for advanced Javascript coders. It has a more steep leaning curve than jQuery, while jQuery is easier to implement without much knowledge of Javascipt.

Javascript language was never a favorite of mine, I learned it at college before there were frameworks. Maybe it was the way they taught it that created my distaste for the language. The exam was with pen and paper instead of a computer, so we had to debug the code ourselves.

But those days are long gone, in between jQuery and MooTools there is the right framework for everyone. If you are handy with Javascript or want to be able to do more, you should give MooTools a try.

I selected nine MooTools scripts, many have their equivalent in jQuery but the MooTools versions are more versatile if you know your code.

A good way to get visitors input is using a poll or survey form. There are various web applications that you can use for free or on a trial version. But if you use WordPress for your website and want total control over your theme and data, a WordPress plug-in is the way to go.

I selected some of the best rated plug-ins for you to try out. I had to forgo some as they aren’t compatible with the latest version of WordPress. If you know of more good plug-ins do share with us.

10 Old and New Useful WordPress Comment Plug-ins

It’s always good to revise what plug-ins are out there that might been forgotten or new ones that are not very popular. The popularity of Twitter has had some impact on comments on weblogs. A lot of people rather make their comment on Twitter then on the actual weblog or website.

The challenge is to bring back discussion to your weblog without denying the new. I listed a few plug-ins that aim to have users comment made on Twitter posted on your weblog or to Tweet the comments made. Also a few oldies that are still working well but are being used less, especially the comment preview. If a weblog has a preview option I always use it.

Akismet is not listed as it comes default with WordPress. Using Akismet is a must, thanks to Akismet the spam that get through is minimal. If you have a low comment traffic I would advice that you use comment moderation. It’s what I do, a couple minutes of work a day keeps spammers away.
