The Skinny: 16 Thin, Fabulous & Free Fonts

If you think you can never be too rich or too thin– specifically the “thin” part- you’ll love today’s edition of featured free fonts. I’ve often found myself searching for thin fonts for projects, but for some reason, most font foundries don’t list “Skinny” as a category. Here are 16 of my favorite thin fonts, most of them gorgeous at large sizes, all of them free to download!

*Note: Most, if not all, of these fonts can be used with @font-face, making them even more fabulous.

Favorite Five: Handwriting Fonts

My mother is a professional calligrapher, so you can imagine how particular I am about handwriting. No font, in my humble opinion, can ever be as beautiful as hand-written letters.

That said, I do use handwriting-themed fonts in my projects quite often- and am absolutely delighted anytime I find a good, free one. Here are my top five choices:

JohnLennon

Yes, I’m a fan- and I’ll admit to writing out the lyrics to Imagine using this font when I first got it. Still, there’s no denying this is a great handwriting font- not only are the letterforms well thought-out, it also features a few John Lennon-inspired dingbats, including a facsimile of his signature. Amandine

It isn’t easy finding handwriting fonts that look both like real handwriting and like art. Amandine, a French-inspired font that makes me think of warm croissants, the Eiffel Tower, and cobblestoned streets, is simply beautiful. Download Amandine »

Daniel

An excellent font that comes in three varieties: Daniel, Daniel Black, and Daniel Bold. Doesn’t sound too exciting, but if you take a look at the full character maps of these variants, you’ll see what makes them special: each one has a distinct look to it, with Daniel being clean and plain, with different pen styles for Black and Bold. Luna

I can’t exactly put my finger on what I love about Luna, which is clean and nicely rendered and just a little bit quirky- but I find myself using this one a lot. It looks like handwriting, and yet it so clearly is not. Download Luna »

Santos Dumont

From font genius Billy Argel comes this absolutely lovely handwriting font, perhaps my favorite of the bunch. Great for everything from vintage illustrations to logos to letterheads to scrapbooking. Download Santos Dumont »

Favorite Five: Fresh Free Fonts

That’s right, it’s time for another feature on free fonts- and since it’s the beginning of a new year, I’m selecting five of the freshest fonts out there today. They’re mostly modern in feel, making them perfect for 2010. Get downloading:

Ubuntu Titling

This is a fresh version of one of my favorite free fonts, Ubuntu Title. Ubuntu Titling looks similar, clean and rounded, but is just nicer somehow. It also includes capitals and small capital alternatives. A good choice for contemporary designs. Download Ubuntu Titling »

Sniglet

Another rounded one, Sniglet is a font from the excellent open-source foundry The League of Movable Type. Made by Kingdom of Awesome, Sniglet is fat and delightful and wonderfully rendered. It also comes with a full character set. Download Sniglet »

Katy Berry

I’ll admit to having a soft spot for curly girly fonts like this one, which are perfect for tea party and bridal shower invitations, or simply for adding a free-spirited feel to your next design project. Download Katy Berry »

Patagonia

Another gem from Kingdom of Awesome, this is the kind of font I find myself looking for reasons to use. Lovely letter spacing and just the right amount of boldness make this an easy-to-read font that works particularly well for headlines and announcements. Download Patagonia »

Lane

Best for last again! It’s not always easy finding “thin” fonts that render well, but Lane does so impeccably. Shown here is Lane Narrow, but the free download also comes with “Upper” and “Posh” versions. Download Lane »

Favorite Five: Free Festive Fonts

It’s about ten days ’til Christmas, and between marathon cookie-baking sessions and shopping like a madwoman, I’ve been on a quest for fabulous and free festive fonts! Sadly, in this quest I’ve encountered many hideous ones- badly drawn, sloppily put together, with maybe a few sprigs of holly added as an afterthought here and there. And with the Holidays hectic enough as it is, I thought I’d help you along with this list of five lovely free fonts, perfect for Christmas cards, gift tags, and giving your seasonal project that festive touch.

Truly elegant, Royal is a blackletter font that works wonderfully in classical styles. Will add a regal touch to your design, and one you’ll want to keep in your font collection even after the holidays are over. Download Royal now »

Do you use festive fonts?

Favorite Five: Free Dingbats

Not only do I love the word dingbat, I’ve been known to spend hours going through dozens of dingbat font lists, constantly amazed by the quality of some of these ornaments and characters. Today, I want to share my top five favorite free dingbat fonts of the moment. Most of these dingbats look great at smaller sizes, so they’re perfect for creating your own icons- but you can also use them at large sizes for posters, etc. Enjoy:

Faux Snow

Because it’s December tomorrow, and winter is my favorite time of year, these snowflake dingbats top my list. Look closely, and marvel at the intricacy of these snowflakes. An @font-face kit is also available, in case you want to use it to pepper your website without having to create graphics.
