21 Album Art Covers for Inspiration

October 21, 2007 By Devlounge

Design comes in many forms. Take album artwork, for example. Not only is it the packaging trying to sell the product, but many times, it is also being used to represent the style of the artist’s music on that album. Sometimes, album art can be so bad that people won’t purchase an actual physical copy of the album just because the packaging is horrible. Other times, people will already have every song on their computers, but yet they feel the need to go out and purchase a physical copy of the album and add it to their collection because it looks so good. I asked some members of Absolutepunk to list some of their favorite album artwork, and I’m now here to show off some true works of art to you.

21 Album Art Covers

The List

Below is a list of 21 (yes, odd number I know, but whatever) really cool album covers. Most were determined by the Absolutepunk members who participated in my thread (much thanks to them!), and some of the others were selected by myself. The list could have been a lot bigger (of course) but each of these covers has their own style, so I think it’s enough – at least for now.

Menomena – Friend & Foe
Album Art 1

Say Anything – In Defense of the Genre
Album Art 2

Jimmy Eat World – Futures
Album Art 3

Punk Goes Acoustic 2
Album Art 4

Mae – The Everglow
Album Art 5

Underoath – Define the Great Line
Album Art 6

Brand New – Deja Entendu
Album Art 7

Mae – Destination: Beautiful
Album Art 8 new

The Beatles – St. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club
Album Art 9

Dashboard Confessional – The Shade of Poison Trees
Album Art 10

O.A.R. – In Between Now and Then
Album Art 11

Sugarcult – Lights Out
Album Art 12

Finch – Say Hello to Sunshine
Album Art 13

Switchfoot – Nothing is Sound
Album Art 14

mewithoutYou – Brother, Sister
Album Art 15

Armor for Sleep – What To Do When You Are Dead
Album Art 16

Circa Survive – On Letting Go
Album Art 17

The Early November – The Room’s Too Cold
Album Art 18

Our Lady Peace – Spiritual Machines
Album Art 19

Sum 41 – Chuck
Album Art 20

Yellowcard – Paper Walls
Album Art 21

I Want More!

While putting together this quick list, I stumbled upon a really cool site dedicated to album artwork and nothing else. Check out Sleevage if you are looking for more album art inspiration. Or, if you are looking to see what covers absolutely suck, you may want to check out the Museum of bad album covers.

More Cover Art Information

There is also a great article on AOL Music about the supposed “fading out” of album artwork because of the increased amounts of music that is downloaded. The article, titled “Picture Worth a Thousand Songs?“, shows that designers are still fairing just fine, with physical copies of the album still playing a major role in the music, and sometimes even the success of the album.

Friday Focus #47

September 28, 2007 By The Team

Here with are with another month drawing to a close. We are just 5 weeks away from the first year anniversary of Friday Focus, so feel free to start putting together your gifts for us now. I’m not sure what exactly the 52nd week of Friday Focus will actually hold, but hopefully I can get a whole bunch of things to stuff the focus with when the time comes. In another quick announcement, I apologize for not getting out the WordPress 2.3 sum up article out right away like I had promised. The week became a lot more busier than I expected it to be. Things are coming, just be patient.

Enough talk, let’s kick off the weekend with a new Friday Focus.

Sites of the Week

Leading off is Groop, a really simplistic, clean design that utilizes flash. They’ve done some really cool work, including stuff for Live Earth, so check them out.

Groop

Next is ShawnBlanc.net, a good example of a dark design that is simplistic, uncluttered, and eye catching.

And finally we have the updated version of Hydra Studio. They’ve done some really clean work, including designs for the bands The Almost, Underoath, and Mae among others.

Design – 100 (Legal) Sources for Free Stock Images
From the digg description: Staying legal as a designer or webmaster means you’ll have to either create your own images or buy them from stock sites. Fortunately, there are a number of sources for free images, and we’ve collected them here. So read on for 100 sources where you can find free stock images: and don’t worry — they’re all legal!

Friday Focus #45

September 14, 2007 By Devlounge

Another weekend is upon us. This was a fairly busy week in terms of site changes around here, most of which have been received fairly well. Now that school is beginning to calm down and settle back into the usual “pattern” I can expect to be in until June, I should hopefully be able to get writing again over the weekend or at the beginning part of next week. Watch for it, because it is about damn time I write something other than these focuses!

Anyways, enjoy the weekend everyone!

Sites of the Week

This week was rather scare, and there wasn’t too much of anything that really caught my eye this week. One site that I did stumble upon and found pretty nice was Cabedge. Cabedge is a Nashville based web design and development studio. Besides offering design and development help, they also offer hosting to any of their clients.

Design – 30 Secret Photoshop Shortcuts
A collection of Photoshop shortcuts aimed at boosting your productivity. From WebDesignerWall.

Programming – Creating Google Custom Search Engines
A custom search engine (CSE) tells Google which sites to search and which to avoid when dealing with a search query. This makes it much easier to get specific, guided answers to questions about a specific subject area. If you create a CSE you can use your expertise in a subject to control where Google looks for information about that topic.

Saturday Slice (FF #43)

September 1, 2007 By Devlounge

Late edition Friday Focus this week, and of course, it is all my fault. Please forgive me for a rare “Saturday” edition of the focus. Yesterday was my first day back at school, and after the seemingly forever when-the-hell-is-this-going-to-end day was over, I was out the rest of the night until early this morning. So no surprise I didn’t do any writing. The irony about the whole thing was all week I planned on writing about how helpful scheduling posts can be when a situation like this arises (like I knew it would), but I never even got a chance to write that one. Watch for it next week sometime. Anyways, enough talk. It’s Saturday Slice.

Sites of the Week

Kicking things off this week is Mobile Web Design, the store front page for Cameron Moll’s book on that exact topic. It was designed by 31Three. My favorite little feature is how you can actually use the More and Back buttons to look at some screenshots.

Mobile Web Design

Next up is Peppermint Tea. The “official” repository for Mint Peppers. The design was recently updated, and has a much more “dark mint” appearance to it.

Rounding out this weeks Friday Saturday Focus is Rainfall Daffinson. A grid based portfolio layout, similar to Particles gives way to a nice collection of design work. Check them out.

Design – Ultimate Web Development Cheat Sheets
Large collection of development “cheat sheets” in categories such as Javascript, CSS, Xhtml/Html, and Ajax.

Programming – Ruby on Rails vs PHP
The only top item in Programming for the last seven days. So here it is, a RoR vs PHP commercial.

Some Changes in Store

We are nearing the 300k unique visitor mark. Once we hit it, there will be some new and improved things in store for us here at Devlounge. The more people that come here, the faster we launch some of the new stuff and updates. I’ve been testing some of this stuff on the newest WordPress [beta] version, 2.3, and the site has been functioning just fine, which is only good news as we get ready to make some changes. Watch for them soon!

Have you advertised with us?

Without trying to sound too selfish, I thought I’d like to point out that we have a bunch of open slots right now for your advertising pleasure. This include 1 homepage slot and 2 sidebar slots. Be sure to visit our advertising page if you are interested.

That is it for this weekend. Enjoy it everyone!

Friday Focus #42

Issue number 42. Exactly 10 weeks to go until we hit a year. Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Sites of the Week

Leading off this weeks top three is Kineda. How many times are we going to feature this place? I believe this is the third time Kineda has made the list, but every redesign looks cleaner and cleaner. I wish the Devlounge homepage was arranged like this, as I think it is very effective and helps tremendously with exposing a lot more content to the visitor. It gives me ideas, but as I said, I’m not redesigning this anymore – I’ve done enough of that already.

Kineda - Back here again

Next up is Challies. Another refreshingly clean magazine / portal style layout featuring lots of blues. Three columns and fairly polished up.

Challies Big

Wrapping up this week is Loose Stitch, an outlining app. It looks like the application interface itself is pretty clean, so I think I’ll be taking a look at this some time over the coming days.

Design – A CSS Styled Table Version 2
Another great tutorial from Veerle. Nice and detailed, and comes with a clean final result (of course).

Programming – Image Browser Controls
Another tutorial, this time from Pup Image on the common right / left arrow controls found on a lot of images theres day when shown as a gallery / slide show.

Other News

Earlier this week I released Particles, our newest WordPress theme. As I mentioned, its lightweighty-ness (not really a word) makes it a great theme to build upon. If you didn’t believe me, check out this screenshot from a blog we’ve been watching via our refer logs that has been building off of the Particles theme to make a web gallery. Obviously, it is still a work in progress, but it’s only been a few days.
