As a web designer having a good resource of icons is essential. The web is full of free icons, finding them is easy, finding the good ones is another matter. A good icon pack contains a broad selection of icons from documents to control icons.
For a serious and professional look the icons must be uniform and have a good color scheme. To save you the time I went through many free icons and selected the best looking ones and two premium sets. Premium icons are good if you want more control over the icon looks.

These icons a pretty famous being online for 5 years already. It’s the icon pack of choice of BuddyPress.
Fugue Icons
2,941 icons in PNG format, I have a preference for PNG formatted icons. These icons are a bit more “sharp” then the previous one, they would do well in a design with strong colors.

A nice icon collection for a simple website or weblog, PNG formatted in size 10×10 and 16×16.
FamFamFam Silk
By now everyone should have heard about FamFamFam icons, I have them on my computer for a couple of years already and regularly dip in the folder for icons when working on websites. These icons where one of the first of many free icons of this kind so FamFamFam always deserves a mention in a list of best web icons.
